Sal Vine (Sue Johnston) is a practice nurse living in the small west country town of Clatterford. She has always made a point of avoiding any contact with the local branch of the Women's Institute.
When her husband dies suddenly, she is forced to re-evaluate her life and change her mind about joining the W.I.
