Miranda (Miranda Hart) runs a Joke Shop with the help of her friend Stevie (Sarah Hadland).
Miranda desperately want to be 'one of the girls' but finds it impossible to fit in with other people. She's a bit too posh. too gauche and too accident prone not to fall flat on her face whenever she tries to do anything.
Her mother Penny (Patricia Hodge) devotes much of her time to the task of finding a 'proper' husband for her daughter.
Miranda has been in love with chef Gary (Tom Ellis) for as long as she can remember but their relationship has never progressed beyond friendship.
