Colin Armstrong (Robson Green) and Howie Scott (Mark Benton) are neighbours and bitter rivals. They are married to sisters Jackie Armstrong (Nicola Stephenson) and Pauline Scott (Sian Reeves).
Christmas Lights (the pilot programme) deals with the annual battle between Colin and Howie over the christmas lights which they draped over and around their respective homes.
The first series, titled Northern Lights, deals with the highs and lows of their endless rivalry.
In the second series, retitled City Lights, Colin and Howie witness a shooting during a shopping expedition. They become key witnesses in the subsequent trial, so the police give them new identities and move them and their families to a "safe house" in London.
