Peter Higgins (Robin Nedwell) is a young musician who has grown tired of living and working in London. He and his wife Sally (Diane Keen) decide to movce to the small village of Shillingbury, in Hertfordshire.
He becomes involed with the local brass band (the Shillingbury Blowers).
The village is inhabited by a number of eccentric characters, including bad-tempeered farmer Jake (Jack Douglas), his daughter Mandy (Linda Hayden), the local vicar, Reverend Norris (Nigel Lambert), postman Harvey (Joe Black), interfering Mrs Simpkins (Diana King) and an old tramp named Cuffy (Bernard Cribbins).
